Participants for Tokyo Bookbinding Club exhibition are varied: they are bibliophiles, professional and amateur bookbinders, and book restorers. Our first show "Fascination of Books and Encounter with Books" was held in 2000, followed by "Books to be created, Books to be stared" (2003), and in "Sleeping Books, Dressing Books" (2005), we focused on unbound books. Then, our fourth exhibition "Country of Books, Shape of Books" is to show traditional bindings and contemporary bindings of Japan.

In Japan, we had a long history of binding washi paper. This made us have an original mature book culture.
However, about 120 years ago, during the Meiji period, when bookbinding machine and papermaking machine were introduced from the West, traditional bindings using washi paper started to diminish. As a result of this, it became difficult of find a newly published book used a Japanese binding technique, except academic books about traditional performing arts, religion, or Japanese classics.

In recent years, as we are reconsidering our tradition, we reappreciate washi paper and Japanese bookbinding. It is our hope that this exhibition will give an opportunity to recognise Japanese bookbinding, which is definitely an important art along with washi paper.

The main parts of this exhibition are creative bookbindings with hints of traditional Japanese binding and collections of Japanese traditional binding. It is an exhibition of how we derive from Japanese binding techniques.

We will also show interesting collections of Japanese bindings and Occidental binding of the Meiji era, Japanese style binding created with DTP techniques, Japanese crape-paper books "Chirimenbon" of an international award winning animation.

Moreover, a lecture "Form and Binding of Japanese Antiquarian Book" will be given by Mr. Setsuo Kushige, who worked for the Imperial Household Agency for a long time, and some demonstrations, historical binding books and binding equipments will also be shown.

We would like a lot of people to see this encounter of Occident and Orient in a country far from Europe.

Over 100 bookbinders from 9 countries (Australia, France, Japan, New Zealand, U.S.A., Canada, Estonia, Netherlands, Belgium) participated in this project.

In Japan, this international exhibition is to show these two parts with one additional part "odor of soil" as related theme to "bush". This part exhibits Aboriginal handmade papers, Australian literature, and Australian culture concerning books.
